Medical Gaslight

At a large hospital, a care team is doing rounds to discuss a patient with chronic pain. The senior attending physician, dismisses the patient’s self-reported pain levels, and declines to prescribe pain medications commenting that “certain demographics tend to have higher pain tolerance.” The rest of the resident physicians on the team nod quietly or look at their charts, hesitant to challenge the authority of the attending doctor.
